It’s Met Ball Monday! And this year, instead of painstakingly scrutinizing the Met Gala shots at Just Jared and Huff Po, I watched the live stream on Vogue.com. Yes, the celebrities and garments were fun to watch in motion, but my favorite part of the broadcast? The HILARIOUSLY audible bitching and moaning of photographers on the sidelines. They complained about non-celebrities ruining shots, actual celebrities arriving too late, fellow photographers’ poor decorum, and a lack of over-the-shoulder generosity from celebs like January Jones and Scarlett Johannsson. True to form, like any large group of rowdy straight men, they also talked sports and T&A. Whether Vogue.com meant to include the audio or not, the effect of haute couture magnificence mingled with such ordinary dialogue was brilliant.
Another surprise was Elettra Wiedemann, the offspring of Issabella Rosselini who, for me at least, had always been ostensibly just one in the vast, vapid sea of models/socialites. But as co-host of the live stream, Wiedemann proved disarming, articulate, warm, and quick-witted. I could actually see her as a cool lady friend. And she went to my alma mater, Boston University. Bffs!
Of course, I will still painstakingly scrutinize the photos. And choose favorites. Stay tuned.
